It is with a terrible sadness that we write of the sudden passing of Rabbi Aaron Scholar. It is nigh impossible to restrain the tears when thinking of him. We recall his warmth, smile, wry sense of humor and his ever willingness to help. Although Rabbi Scholar’s position was to maintain
all of the She'arim facilities, it was the force of his personality, love or people and genuine warmth that made the biggest difference to She’arim. Nothing was too little for his attention because he truly cared for people, and he would do whatever he could to help them.
A gentle man whose love of people showed in everything he did, Rabbi Scholar displayed a rare humility. One might never know the depth of his Torah learning had they not been fortunate to hear him teach Torah, but those students who did, saw a man whose love of learning was equal to his love of people.
In a busy office, his presence made a difference to every staff member. When the atmosphere was tense, he lightened it up; when someone was upset, he made them laugh; when work needed to be done, he did it; and when anybody needed anything – he was there with a smile and a helping hand. He invested his energies in judging others favorably, forever pursuing and enabling peace to reign over all else. Being in his presence was simply a pleasure.
Rabbi Scholar was a true mentch, and foremost a family man. He would speak affectionately of his lovely wife, Laya, his children, Rachelle, Nechama Meira, Tehila and Atara, and his grandchildren. He was proud of each of their accomplishments and they gave him immense nachas.
May his memory be blessed.
She’arim would like to put together a memory album of Rabbi Scholar to present to his family. Those of you who can share a story, memory or impression of Rabbi Scholar, please send an email to
