They Have Arrived PDF Print E-mail

The millennial generation has arrived! And if it’s an unfamiliar term, just Google it! And while you’re there, look up Generation Y.

While She'arim has a truly multi-generational

population, a substantial number of students are referred to us by college campus outreach professionals. In the last several years, campus outreach has increased dramatically. Jewish outreach centers are found not only in major cities but also in towns off the beaten track, all around the world. And this has translated into new students for She'arim.

At first, we couldn't figure out the new "look" of these students. They were the same, yet different. Whereas in the 60's and 70's Jews returned to Judaism looking for warmth and community, in the 80's to add meaning to their already successful lives, and in the 90’s to set boundaries for themselves, this generation is looking for direction.

How to live life! Raised in a milieu where "it's all about you", they want a life that has a greater purpose, where they can contribute to the greater good. They don't know exactly how to do that, and they're looking to find out. They're technologically savvy but want to know the more human side of life.

In a world where there is the freedom and possibility to do anything you want, they want to know what to do with all that freedom. They want direction, consistency and values. Torah strikes a deep chord, because in a world of falsity, Truth resonates loud and clear.

Even when you're wearing headphones!
